Spain ~ Calatayud

Winemaker Notes

Our Layer Cake Garnacha from Calatayud, Spain is rich and powerful, yet clean and balanced. Layered with aromas of ultra ripe black fruit. On the palate, the wine shows intense dark fruit with a background of rich dark chocolate and fresh ground coffee with a long creamy finish. The intensity of flavor from these ancient vines is beautifully offset by the great freshness from the high-altitude vineyards; the Layer Cake Garnacha is not to be overlooked.

Vineyard Notes

Our old vine Garnacha vineyards are situated on the high plain of Zaragoza in Central Spain, which has a history of vineyards and winemaking dating back to the Romans. Our vineyards are at 3,000′ elevation, so even with hot, dry, sun-drenched days, the nights are very cool, maintaining fresh fruit characteristics and complex aromatics in the wine.

The vines are planted in ancient soils from the worn-down mountains of the Iberian Range. The rainfall is minimal in the region, so the vines must go very deep to find a water source in order to live. As you will taste, the vines produce wine of deep character and surprising freshness.

Tasting Notes

Our new Layer Cake from Calatayud, Spain, is a rich and powerful Garnacha, very layered aromatically with fresh red stone fruit, spice and a hint of leather and tobacco. On the palate, the wine shows intense dark fruit with a background of chocolate and coffee with a long, creamy finish. This wine will definitely lead to more babies being born in the world.
